What are the dangers of Rogaine and other treatments for hair loss?
I want to use Rogaine or any other new product growth hair, but I am hesitant to do so, because I personally believe that there must be significant long-term side effects. Help!
Good question. In summary, Rogaine (Minoxidil) is present and this limits their potential risks. The mechanism of action is that Minoxidil it may directly activate or stimulate hair follicle microcirculation around the follicle, increased cutaneous blood flow through its vasodilating effects. (Minoxidil may also alter metabolism of androgens in the scalp.) However, when taking Minoxidil systemic (pill form), hypotensive effects (low blood pressure). Therefore, it would be dangerous if too Rogaine is absorbed through the head in the bloodstream. Fortunately, minoxidil is poorly absorbed through the skin. The average systemic absorption of minoxidil 2% (range 0,3-4,5%). Systemic adverse reactions are therefore unlikely topical administration. Placebo-controlled trials with minoxidil alone showed an increase of dermatological effects of active drug. Therefore, the risk of side effects are quite hypotensive none. Use Rogaine in the sunburned areas or open wounds, obviously, increase the risk of systemic side effects. I’m no doctor, but generally in my readings, I would say that Rogaine is quite safe to use. The only real downside to this drug is to be applied 2x a day, and that new growth will recede if you stop using it (this also applies to Propecia). It presumably takes a few months for new growth visible. The only other drug that is approved by the Allogeneic FDA for alopecia is Propecia (finasteride). Unlike Rogaine, this is taken as a pill, which increases your chance of side effects. This is because that not only can affect your hair, but also other places in your body through your bloodstream. With greater frequency of adverse reactions to finasteride is related to sexual function. Propecia is also teratogenic and is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy. Interestingly, finasteride was first used time for the treatment of BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia). So taking this drug for hair loss may also have a beneficial effect of a reduction risk of BPH. However, in an article in the NEJM 2003 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=pubmed&dopt=Abstract&list_uids=12824459&query_hl=3&itool=pubmed_docsum) they found that the use of finasteride increased the risk of high-grade cancer of the prostate. This, obviously, more research is needed to determine whether the use of finasteride as a preventive BPH 25% decreased risk of prostate cancer (leading to the prostate, decreased urinary problems cause) would be worth worth the risk of high-grade cancer of the prostate. Furthermore, treatment of BPH using doses up to 5 mg / day in contrast to the 1mg/day for alopecia, by As far as this study is applied to the dose taken is likely unknown. Apart from that, other FDA-approved methods of hair loss, such as Nizoral Shampoo (1-2% ketoconazole), among others. But there is not much documentation for those. Hopefully this helps a bit …
