I *think* my hair is thinning. (its difficult to tell because I have thick, coarse hair. but it seems thinner at the roots to me.) I’m rather paranoid about this since my father is quite bald and my friends are already starting to lose their hair — but I’m a young man in his twenties!

In my desperation I’ve begun to toy with the idea of using rogaine. I was wondering if anyone could help with the following questions:

Is it true that if I use it and then stop, that the rest of my hair will fall out? (not just the “new” hair.)
how does the foam differ from the regular formula?
is this stuff like goop in your hair all day?
is there anything else I should know?

can anyone recommend any other tricks or treatments to help.

Does anyone have information about the hair loss treatment drug called Provillus?

A little about my family hair loss history. My grandfather is bald. But my fathers side of the family have some or little hair loss. I’m starting to bald, but by the looks of it, it looks like i’m inheriting my fathers side of the family hair loss. I’m wondering if this is the right drug for me.

What is causing the small patches of hair loss on my dog?

My dog has small patches of hair missing hair on her sides. It wasn’t too bad at first now I’m noticing more patches? She doesn’t seem to be itching and has not lost her apetitite. In fact she is still very active. There isn’t anything anything else wrong with her other than this.

She has puppies that are now 6 weeks old and one of them appears to have a small patch of hair missing from it’s head. The other two seem okay.

Can someone tell me what this could be?

I know that they should be taken to the vet but I don’t have the funds to do this right now.

It sounds like your dog has the same thing my dog has. I just got into the vet and it is one of 2 different skin mites. A likely cause is scabies which is pretty common, depending on where you live. it’s easy to treat but can be tough to diagnos because it can be hard to see them under a microscope, even for an experienced vet. we treated our dog with revolution and after 5-7 days will be able to tell whether or not it is in fact scabies. Scabies are contagious so you want address that right away, especially with the puppies at home. The other possible cause is demodectic mange. this is caused by skin mites that are normally found on dogs skin but have overmuliplied. My vet said that it can be slightly more common in labs (which my dog is). This is a much longer treatment process and from what I understand it is something you want to have overseen my a vet you trust since the typical protocol involves a medication that can be toxic to dogs. There is a test that can be done by scrapping the dogs cheek (inside) and sending off to a lab. from here it takes about 2 weeks to diagnos and can take about 8 weeks to treat. I would suggest that you start by taking your dog (and her new pup) to the vet to get a skin scraping first. That way the vet can take a look at it and advise you from there. I know you said funds were tight but if you can go soon you’ll save yourself more money in the long run. You could check into something like Care Credit which is like a credit card for your vet bills. you can apply right online (www.carecredit.com) and use it immeadiately. they even have interest free options if you pay your minimum on time. I would also check your local shelters and animal hospitals for any special discounts or reduced fee services they might offer. good luck, hope she and her puppies do well.

My pit bull terrier has had terrible skin problems since birth?

She’s itchy all over, has hair loss & rednes,s on belly,neck,legs,even head that even will bleed if she scratches enough. We’ve had every test known to man done-full allergy bloodwork, testing for mites, fleas, any type of parasite, changed food, food bowls,beds,blankets, shampoo- need I go on?We’ve literally spent thousands of dollars with no results. I’m not sorry we spent the money because at least things got ruled out but does anyone have any ideas that the vet & I haven’t thought of? Or has someone experienced something similar? We’re desparate, I love her but there’s no way she can be happy always taking different pills or getting poked or worse being itchy & uncomfortable for the rest of her life.

How old is your dog? My male Pit Bull has so many different skin allergies but they were much worse when he was younger. The first allergy our vet told us about is a common one…food. He is extremely allergic to chicken and so we changed his food. I had to start checking the labels cause I noticed that even some of the lamb and rice formulas have a little bit of chicken-by-product in them. I even check the labels on on his treats. I can always tell when he has gotten into something he shouldn’t have…he breaks out instantly! After we changed his food things got a little better but he was still very itchy. We did more tests and found out he has pollen/outside allergies. When he was young (about 10mths to 3yrs) we had to do seasonal shots. They helped a great deal with the itching and the sores and as he got older (he’ll be 5 this DEC.), he seemed to grow out of his outside allergies. We don’t do the shots anymore and he hasn’t had a breakout in over a year.

It seems like you’ve tried everything…maybe you need a second opinion?….Try another vet and see what they come up with. There is hope…I know…its awful to go through and to see your dog like this. Hopefully you will find a solution soon….good luck!

Hair Loss Treatment by Herbal Means

In a recent article printed in the European Journal of Dermatology regarding an herbal hair loss product they are currently studying in Kang et, researchers have been studying a native plant called Schisandra Nigra from the Island of Jeju in South Korea for its rumored ability to re-grow hair. Currently, they are documenting studies conducted on rat hair with good results.

They applied 85% ethanol extract of S. Nigra (Schisandra Nigra) to rat vibrissa follicles. The most common effect was vibrissa follicles showed a significant increase in hair fiber length as well as the induction of the hair shaft’s anagen (growth phase) progression. The expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen in the bulb matrix region as well as the proliferation of immortalized vibrissa dermal papilla cells also increased with signs of more activity in the hair follicle cells when S. Nigra EtOH (ethanol) extract was applied.

Researchers examined S. Nigra’s relationship with the TGF-beta2 complex to help determine what mechanism helps induce hair growth. TGF-beta2 is a signal pathway known to regulate catagen induction of the phase that begins when the hair’s growth cycle ends.

After applying S. Nigra to rat hair for 7 days, the results show that the expression of TGF-beta2 was significantly lower in the bulb matrix region in comparison to that of the control follicles expected to be in the anagen-catagen phase. The results suggest that S. Nigra extract potentially promotes hair growth through down regulation of TGF-beta2 and the proliferation of dermal papilla.

In simpler terms, the S. Nigra plant extract stops hair follicles from going into their resting phase. With hair follicles not going into their resting phase, more hair will be seen at the same time. These findings only apply to rat hair at the moment and have not been confirmed to be effective on human hair growth.

We currently do not recommend the use of herbal hair loss products for treatment of male or female patterned hair loss due to the lack of substantial evidence of their effectiveness.
